Try to notice if his breathing rhythm is normal and that he is not out of breath . I have noticed that sometimes I end up speaking during the “wrong” part of the breathing cycle and it gets worse....

Yes, exactly. Sometimes we do repeat these sounds/words _a bit_ more but get way too conscious of it. We need to accept this and remind ourselves no one is fluent all the time....
