Imo, SLPs who stutter are the best one to treat the stutter for exactly the reasons you state. If that is what you really want to do, go for it :)...

Bought this book 2 month ago, can definitely recommend it. Also "self-therapy for the stutterer" is also something worth picking up imo. 10$ on Amazon and I think its worth it....
