In my school I often give up my free time to help the kids who struggle with reading or language. I arrange time in a room with kids who struggle with English, (mainly reading) and help them out either by helping them with work or helping them practice. Obviously if a kid struggles with reading then to help them I have to read aloud from countless books when they get stuck. They feel at ease with me and don't get embarrassed to try and get it wrong because it's only us in the room and although they trust that I know they never see me as a teacher. Plus is anyone's qualified to teach phonics it's me, like I get at least 10 times more practice than they do. My kids ALWAYS improve and when they spot me between classes they tell me and thank me. They're always so happy.
