People can be very cruel to stutterers. I remember being made fun of constantly when I was in school. My stutter is way better now than it used to be but when I have a block and struggle with words I have encountered people that stifle laughter or just outright giggle. It is extremely difficult to deal with - but over the years I have developed a thicker skin and get over it quickly. As for reducing the severity of a stutter - we all need help to varying degrees. In my own case, “psychology” makes a stutter worse but I don’t think is the reason for it. Growing up, I went to a speech therapist for a few years and he taught us breathing exercises - basically his method was to align breathing and speech where you speak as you exhale. So in the early stages we had to speak quite slowly and pay attention to speaking while exhaling. It did make a huge difference to my speech. I would suggest looking for a speech therapist in your area. If you can’t find one or can’t afford one I would be happy to try and tel you more about what I was taught at speech therapy. All the best!
