I don't really understand how reading from a book out loud could possible be helpful. Sure, I guess it strenghtens your vocal muscles and such like, but I mean, it isn't my vocal structure or anything...

This is an anecdote that still does nothing to prove that cowardice or general social meekness causes speech disfluency. There are plenty of legitimate studies being done, you should check them out....
