For me I think its because I let my guard off when I am with people who are close to me. And I am extra conscious and careful when I talk to strangers so I talk slowly and try to be super calm....

This is true. That's why you need something extra to compensate for stuttering. Also, going into occupations where you barely talk is also ideal....
