Why am I stuttering? Hi, recently (about a couple of years I think) I started to stutter only in a specific situation and although I tried a bunch of things, nothing has changed. The situation is whenever someone I'm not familiar with (so pretty much the entire world besides my close friends/family) asks my name in this manner: "What is your name?" I've noticed I don't have issues when it's "with whom am I talking to?" or "who are you?" or even "and your name is?". This started out of nowhere, suddenly, at work. I got stupidly nervous when someone out of nowhere asked my name and I just... couldn't. The sound doesn't come out, as if I can't speak, and it's ONLY my name. I was able to, after a very awkward moment, to speak like "Bond. James." (surname first) which was even more awkward. This also happens on the phone, so being directly in person doesn't seem the case. There's a lot of times where I KNOW I'm going to have my name asked, so I try to prepare myself mentally before, but it doesn't help at all. I keep thinking "What is your name? James" about a dozen of times, but when it actually happens, I simply freeze. When I noticed this, I started trying things out. At first, I tried just to gulp it down and say it nonetheless: "J-j-j-j-j-j-j-j-j-j-j-j-j-j-james!" Or I'd often mess with the volume: "J-J-J-J-JAMES!" Then I read a bit and noticed I didn't had much issues when I don't start with "J": "It's James." "With James." "I'm James." I tried asking friends to ask other friends (that I'm not really close with) to ask my name but it seems if I'm just a tiny familiar with the person, I don't stutter. I also tried practicing alone (talking to myself sounds really, really lunatic, but I thought it might help) and I think it did help... a tiny bit. In not getting TOO much nervous and being able to answer with one of the alternatives. Which then made me think in what was causing this, and I think there's plenty of things that could be related. - I "think" and write/read in english probably more than my native language, to the point that some words/expressions come in english and I need to think of a translation in my native language. - I talk very little, I'm not very social and I prefer to chat over any messenger than in person. I type more than I talk. So I'm not really sure why I'm getting like this and with this very specific situation even. Does anyone have gone/is going through something similar and can share some tips on what can I try/test to "fix" it?
