Socially I was quiet but always had a small group of friends. Most people were nice about it, especially if they knew about it. If course there always are some jerks but you need learn to ignore them....

Yup, I used to try to hide it, but it would ALWAYS backfire. When we don't say we stutter, we act in a way that can be perceived as 'weird' and "confusing" by other people. As soon as they realize it...
