I think my stutter is considered mild and I think small doses of Xanax help me to be more fluent. I will take a .25 mg Xanax maybe twice a week. I don't have a set routine, I just wait till I start having a hard time getting words out, then take the Xanax. I feel like stuttering can be a vicious cycle. You stutter, feel anxious because of it, then stutter more. For me, the Xanax shaves off my anxiety about my speech, which helps me to be more fluent. It also helps me to not care about my stutter, which I think should be the ultimate goal. The medicine and speech therapy has made me more comfortable with telling strangers that I stutter. With my job, I have to talk to strangers quite a bit. When I'm having a tough time with fluency, I tell the person I stutter. I keep disclosure in my back pocket as a lifeline when I need it. If you're having a tough time with fluency while talking to someone who is unaware that you stutter, tell them you stutter. Nobody cares.
