Some people like having famous people to look up to. Some don't care about it. If someone mentions a famous person to you, it might just mean that they think it's relevant and perhaps that it's able to help you somehow. We can choose to interpret this as positive interest, which isn't a bad thing to get from people. We can also use the opportunity to inform those people about aspects of what they're saying that are misunderstood, if we so choose. That's an option, but it doesn't mean they were necessarily wrong in trying to be positive (as per the above).
