This is pretty much how it happened for me as well. I was in Speech Therapy one or two days a week from 2nd grade all the way up until I got to High School. It never really helped me so when I got to High School I just...stopped going. I didn't see the point. I still stutter to this day and I've been out of High School for almost 20 years now. Some days are good. Some aren't. But I just roll with the punches and go on with my life.
