I’ve known 3 mature SLP’s socially and zero of them knew I suffered from a sometimes debilitating covert stutter. I’m willing to bet that most lay people have no idea that your repetitions or secondary behaviors (clicks, looking away, etc) are involuntary. I bet most people are having their own semi-involuntary response to seeing uncommon behaviors. If they knew you were struggling to speak more smoothly, do you think they would feel/respond differently? An experiment - start by walking up to counter, saying “Hey, I stutter so sometimes it takes me longer to get out my words. How much is your XYZ? Even better if you are with friends bc they can be your backup to notice how other person is responding.
