Thank you so much for sharing your parents' words! I really like their advice to focus on the person and the conversation. The anxiety piece has been huge for him. I've partnered with his therapist and we work together to reduce his anxiety around speaking tasks. He's been having a lot of success with that lately, which has boosted his self-confidence tremendously. In fact, he placed an online order for take-out for the first time in his life last week and was thrilled by his ability to manage his nerves and use his strategies in the moment. Although he did joke that he needed to change his shirt because he had sweated through his t-shirt in 3 seconds flat. At this point, he's challenged himself to start 5 conversations with strangers this month, but of course COVID has made that a little tougher. Given his progress to date and his generalization skills, I'd typically move to more field training but his family includes a member with a serious pre-existing condition which has made them very cautious about possible COVID-19 exposure. All of our therapy is via Zoom, but I have started to invite guests to broaden his practice. He's making fabulous progress and I want to support him in whatever way I can!
