I feel the same way as you. Because they likely don’t understand that stuttering varies from week to week, or from situation to situation. But I try to just let people know that it varies so they know. I’d rather have people compliment other aspects, such as saying that I stuttered, but I came across really confident. Or them saying that my body language has been a lot more confident lately. I find those compliments of my character and personality to be more uplifting. And see me stuttering rather as a bi-product of how I’m feeling inside overall. So I kinda try to translate the “Your stuttering is getting better” to “You’ve been feeling better lately, haven’t you?” Because when someone compliments my stuttering getting better, it kinda makes me feel performance anxiety around them, as if they are focusing on my stuttering rather than my message. But heck, they likely mean well at the least.
