I totally get your frustration … but the paradox is real. I only really conquered my stutter once I started speaking in public—a lot. I had to learn not to care if I blocked and not to measure my success as a speaker by how fluent I was. I started caring less and things got better. I’m not saying it’s a one-size-fits-all solution but it worked for me. My daughter inherited this thing from me and that’s been my advice to her, too: go out there and stutter boldly—because what she has to say is worth waiting for. I know it sounds facile. But a stutter feeds on anxiety like a parasite. It helps to find ways not to feed it.
