Writing about stuttering can take ages because experiences are varied. My mistake right from primary school was hiding my stutter and appearing to everyone as a normal speaker. I was made the senior prefect in high school because they didn't notice any anomaly during my interview. I didn't perform as expected at the end of my service year, all due to my stutter. I asked my Mum if she noticed I stuttered. She said no, but the only thing she noticed was that I speak fast. So, to my Mum, I am fluent. Wrong! I am in my forties now, and still pushing ahead. Bottom line, I echo your sentiments. Speak when you are urged to, don't submit to stuttering in any way for fear of being jeered at.
