It’s hard to say because everyone’s different. I’d say it’s okay if he’s trying to drop hints for you to figure it out. Like for me, if I know I’ll have trouble saying something like Parmesan Chicken, I’ll make sure the server can see the menu and I’ll physically point to it, while saying ‘ummm I’ll take the chicken please!’ Usually they put two and two together.
