You are so right about it not being a mental disorder, though the result of stuttering affects your total ability to function in society. It fosters social withdrawal and loss of self-esteem which can lead to life-long depression which is an emotional rather than a mental problem. I recovered my fluency through psychotherapy dealing with the anger and resentment of an abusive childhood. It wasn’t a mental problem, but rather an emotional problem, related to long-term anxiety. At 70 I became fully fluent. That was 6 years ago and I remain fluent, and no one can believe I ever stuttered. Good luck in your journey. Don’t ever allow anyone to make you feel like a freak. There is a difference between a mental and an emotional disorder. Sue
