I’m grateful to have had many great managers that have been supportive in my career. Bring it up in the first couple of months during a 1:1 as part of getting to know each other’s styles. One manager was concerned if I would have a problem talking during an emergency (plant role), and wanted to talk through it in case I needed an accommodation. Another manager brought up toast masters and paying for speech therapy. While at face value it may be condescending, the tone and conversation focus more on them valuing my contributions and setting me up for continued success. During group calls with clients, some managers took over if I was experiencing a nearly 100% block. Not ideal, but in those moments, my manager transitioned politely and let me have a breather. I wasn’t offended, but I know some on this sub dislike that approach. Overall, it’s worth a conversation to discuss how you can remove obstacles or accommodate your direct reports to setup for success. Be honest, come from a place of trust and support, and let them tell you their preferences.
