I would never advocate using a stone in your mouth. But, I think the concept of not closing your jaw has great merit in learning fluency. It was part of achieving fluency for me. When I would block, I would clamp my jaw. In speech therapy, I learned to keep my breath always flowing out as I spoke. To never fully close my mouth as I was doing the exercises. So, I can understand why they use the stone.
