Anyone else think family members made your stutter worse when it first began When I first began noticing signs of stuttering, I think I was around 7 or 8 years old. At first it wasn’t bad, like very mild stuttering. But as I got older, it gradually got worse. As this happened out of nowhere, I would constantly get berated for stuttering by my parents. Always saying “slow down”, “just breath” or the usual “stop stuttering”. They always looked down on me for this, they forced me to talk out loud when ordering in a restaurant when I was a kid as they thought it would cure me. But it only made things worse and embarrassing . Having to go through these experiences made me talk less for almost all of grade school. I feel like if my family were more accepting of my stutter I wouldn’t stutter as much as I would today, I wouldn’t view my voice as a bad thing.
