There’s actually research that shows that for many, once you address the secondary behaviors, the primary ones — the stuttering itself— tends to improve too. Basically, all of your secondary behaviors are your own personal way of avoiding disfluencies, and many not only don’t help but make speech more disfluent. If you’re not convinced, though, a good SLP shouldn’t have any problems with you asking about the specific evidence for and against certain techniques. Ask them and see if they can walk through some of the studies on this. Speech-language pathology strives to be a science-driven discipline. Hope this helps.
