I’ve had a stutter my entire life which was mostly brought under control in early elementary school thanks to a very solid speech therapy program. Unfortunately, it isn’t something that will ever truly go away but my stutter tends to only really get bad and super noticeable when I’m in a position of duress or anxiety where my coping skills go out the window. I used to work as a bartender at a brewery and thus it was not uncommon at all to head home after a shift reeking of alcohol just because of the job. About a year ago I headed home around midnight after a close completely soaked in beer from a keg explosion like an hour earlier and got lit up turning right on a red (I had no idea it was a no turn light and had always turned there). The officer came to my window, car smelled horribly of booze, and I’m sitting there barely able to form coherent sentences because I knew how bad it looked. First thing I told the officer is that I am a stutterer, and thankfully she was not immediately accusatory of me. She had me get out of my vehicle and called her supervisor over so I could perform field sobriety tests for them, and by the time he had arrived I had calmed down enough to actually speak relatively normally. I explained my line of work to them, did the tests which went fine because I was completely sober (my clothes not so much) and after running my info let me go free. That was my first time getting pulled over and it was a very surreal experience but in my situation it all worked out well.
