I've been there, it's always best to be up front about it. For one, I've found that I stutter far less in front of people I've told in comparison to those I haven't. The name thing can be okay, especially if they understand and can even help you out sometimes (making sure to introduce you in certain stressful situations). I had to explain to a girl once that I had used a different name for an internship, since I was going to introduce her to a friend I met there. Not only did she not care, but she opened up about stuff she was nervous about with me! We all have our things man.
