New team member has a stutter/speech impediment. How do I help make him feel at ease? I just got news that I would have a new team member reporting to me! He’s got an amazing resume and from the few emails we’ve exchanged I’m so excited to work with him. However I’ve never talked with him in person yet, but my managing director told me he believes he has a stutter or a speech impediment of some sort. I’m meeting with him next week and I just want to be prepared to make him feel welcomed and happy to be here! Is there any advice or tips? Part of me is very blunt and I thought about just acknowledging it and asking some questions surrounding how long he’s had it or if there is anything that is particularly tricky or exacerbating but now I’m overthinking it being insensitive. I would love any advice from how you wish people would acknowledge or ignore this when communicating or meeting someone for the first time!
