I just visited the campus about an hour ago, so I could meet the secretary and have a sense of the learning atmosphere. I never stepped foot on that particular campus, and I also wanted to establish a rapport with the staff. During my visit, I never stammered once. We even visited the classroom where I'm going to be teaching at tomorrow. It's an ELA Challenge class, an environment where I most prefer. Although the secretary provided a lot of information, it isn't hard to understand at all. I'll be sure to write down a list of questions when I arrive again in the morning. Finally, I met one student who was sent out of the classroom with a referral (slip for bad behavior), and he seemed indignant. I tend to give people the benefit of the doubt, but I believe the teacher was impatient with him; and decided for the administration office to discipline him themselves. I neither understood nor liked this pedagogy, but I always remind myself to not take these observations at face value completely. I plan on emailing the teacher today, and introducing myself as well as asking her on the overall behavior of the classroom.
