Honest opinion, I wouldn’t waste your time on the program. I /almost/ bought “Mind-straining and Neuroplasticity” on Amazon and realized every-single review and rating was made by a bot. Can confirm for yourself by viewing other comments the commenters have made; they’ll make near exact responses for other books by the same author. As someone who works in cyber security, it looks an awful lot like bots were paid to read the summary of the books and apply a “Wow, this book changed my life!!!!” Comment. That all said, I do believe that a large portion of the stuttering population suffers from severe anxiety because of their stutter. From my own experience, EVERY time I tried not to stutter in meetings, introductions, etc. It would happen. In fact, the more I tried not to stutter the more I would. I’ll eventually make a post on this subreddit about my experience in speech therapy and how my change in mindset has DRASTICALLY improved my speech. Though I’d advocate heavily for others to find the path that works for them. If that’s by reading some pseudo-science book that helps, go for it. If it’s in-person therapy, great. Whatever helps you, but don’t latch onto any single resource because the ‘community’ says you should. Many books that offer solutions are designed to make the author money, not to help people who stutter. So, I will leave you with this little analogy I learned in therapy: —- “Put a long piece of timber of the ground, any normal old 2x4 will work. When a stranger comes by, ask them to walk across the plank. Most will do so without issue. It’s simply one foot in front of the other for several steps. Now, raise that plank 10 feet in the air and ask them to do it again. Some will without issue, but the majority will begin to get uneasy. They’ll shake, lose their balance, and many will fall. They fall even though the objective hasn’t changed: Walk across the plank. The ONLY change is that the wood is now 10 feet higher. Why does the distance from the ground alter one’s ability to walk in a straight line? Simple, the goal of walking across hasn’t changed, but now there’s the fear of falling. When introduced with a fear, it’s understandable that tasks normally accomplished with ease become difficult. Most stutters can sing without issue. Most stutters can talk alone and to close friends with little-to-no stammering. Most stutters can’t present to a group or even introduce themselves without stuttering. Why? Because we believe that fluency is a core factor in coming across intelligent and equal. We know we aren’t fluent, but if others know then they may see us as lesser for it. So we try to speak fluent when the need situation for it. Suddenly we’re not worried about speaking, we’re worried about speaking fluently. For us, speaking fluently is our “10 feet off the ground”. By trying to force fluency, we lose our balance. We fall.” —- So when see miracle cures offering hypnosis and solutions like breathing exercise, take them with a grain of salt. When a stranger who ‘overcame’ their stutter tells you “It got better when I just accepted it” take it at face value, but know it wasn’t a switch they flipped off one day. We’ve spent years of our life fighting the stuttering and training our fight or flight to kick in whenever we speak under certain circumstances. This isn’t reconfigured in a week’s time or after several chapters. It takes a shift in mindset to achieve fluency. The sure-fire way to achieve fluency is to recognize and accept we aren’t fluent. To quit lifting ourselves 10-feet off the ground when the task is simply “walk forward”. Im rooting for you, u/js6104. Not just for your path to fluency, but for your journey towards self-acceptance as well. ❤️
