I am 47 and people still make fun of my stutter, however, when they do, I give them a history of my stuttering. It usually takes about five minutes. I used to think folks thought I was stupid but I don’t anymore. Not sure if that is true or I am ignoring it. I do know that I used to replace words and I think that made me sound stupid. I have cats and always get stuck on Ls so litter box became cat box. What’s a cat box, they ask. You know, the box where they go pee and poop. Argh! Now, I just power through my words. If someone finishes my sentence, I will finish it anyway. I think people just don’t know in that situation. And I have read where some stutterers don’t mind it. Just let them know that you don’t appreciate it. I say, “You can finish my sentence but I am going to finish it anyway”. My stutter has come and gone over the years. It mostly had to do with my self-esteem. It sucked in high school, great in college, okay in my 30s, came back with a passion in my late 30s early 40s and now okay now.
