Just wanted to share a little victory: I've been consistently running a D&D game! **Warning: Longish** (tl;dr at the bottom) My favorite hobby is tabletop RPG's, more commonly referred to as "Dungeons & Dragons" or better known as "That thing they're doing at the beginning of Stranger Things." I've played off and on and while I love playing, my heart is in the role of the Dungeon Master - which is kinda for me since the primary format for conveying information in the game is through speaking. Which I'm not great at, what with the stutter. About six months ago, I decided to (with the help of some online gaming friends) start up a regular game of D&D with myself in the role of Dungeon Master. I was terrified. The early games were... rough. There were sessions where I felt like I could barely get a word out without descending into stammering. However, I told the group before we started that this might be a problem - so they took it in stride and were supportive when it got bad. After a little, it got easier. Sometimes a certain word or syllable would trip me up, but I found if I took a breath, apologized to my players for the hold up, and slowed down - things actually went okay. Then things started going well. Slowly, over many hours of constant talking back and forth with this absolutely awesome and supportive group for 3 hours a week every Sunday, I'm starting to for gain some control over my speech. It's the first time I've ever felt this way and I feel about 10 times lighter - I've even started to develop a reputation as a talker. If you're having problems and feeling held down by your speech, it doesn't have to be the end. Chase your dreams, do the things you love, and don't let something like a stutter stop you from doing something that legit makes you happy. If you have any questions about what I do to try and improve my own fluency, or just have more questions about what it's like playing D&D with a stutter - just post a comment or send me a DM if that's not your style. _____ **TL;DR** I've been running a D&D game for six months and I haven't let my stutter stop me. I hope that /r/stutter finds this interesting. The community here is awesome and supportive and was a big part of giving me the courage to try something I've always wanted too. So, thanks <3.
