I spent 3 years working at a McDonalds when I was in high school. I was the best drive thru order taker in the store, so I’d always be up there. For well over a year I held my own, I stuttered but I’d get through the order. One Sunday morning, I was up there and just froze. I have 5 or so “greetings” I use, and none of them wanted to come out. Through the “team” communication button I called my manager, he took over the order, and for about 20 minutes he’d do drive thru while I mimicked him, trying to get my voice going again. I couldn’t. That was the last day I ever worked drive thru. Front counter and everywhere else I was fine, but I just could not take an order again. There used to be days where I wouldn’t stutter once, some of my co workers that didn’t work often weren’t even aware I stuttered. But from that day on, I just could not take orders in drive thru. After that I switched to kitchen, and for the rest of my time at McDonalds I’d bounce between kitchen (where I was one of the best in the store) and front counter. I worked there for 3 years because I loved working with the people in the store. All bonding over our shared hatred of people and the job, it was a work environment I haven’t been able to duplicate since.
