People blaming you

People blaming you I don’t know if others have had this experience but for me, one of the worst parts about stuttering is how others view it. For me, people have always seemed to blame me for it, even my parents. Just recently my mom said “It honestly shocks me that you haven’t gotten rid of it yet; you’re so smart!” I know she didn’t mean harm but I cried for hours after that. It seems like everyone views stuttering as a quirk you can get rid of if you actually tried. Feeling like a failure for something I have no control over isn’t fun to say the least. And I guess I understand why they think that; I don’t stutter *all* the time so naturally they think that if I can be fluent sometimes, I can be that way all the time. Add in the fact that for 99% of people, speaking fluently is second nature and voila: this mindset is born. Still, NOT fun to deal with when you had speech therapy throughout your childhood and teen-hood to no avail. Anyone relate?
