If someone does not hear or see well they DO NOT get therapy but use widely accepted prosthetics (hearing aids/eyeglasses) for their condition. Unfortunately if someone does not speak well (stutters) they get stuttering therapy which is often useless and harmful; whereas the person who stutters would often be helped by a prosthetic such as delayed auditory feedback (DAF) or the Edinburgh Masker (EM). To me it is criminal that the speech prosthetics are seen as alternate therapies and not main stream therapies, and are not offered by speech clinics. According to the groundbreaking research on the EM it is a great help to most who use it (about 70%) as published in the British Journal of Communication Disorders over 40 years ago. As you say the EM is no longer manufactured because the speech establishment is against it because it would take jobs away from the speech language proctologists. They do not care about the person who stutters, they only care about themselves. When you try the EM, you will know immediately if it will help you or not. It is a bit noticeable as are eyeglasses and hearing aids, but it is a lot better than my severe blocking. Even though the EM is no longer available commercially, it can be found if you look hard enough. It is not free but the price is a lot less than stuttering therapy and in my humble opinion the Edinburgh Masker is well worth the price.
