I appreciate the reply! It’s great that you are conquering yourself in these various ways. I have heard people say before that stuttering can dissipate as a by-product of self improvement, so anything healthy we do, such as exercise or therapy can help. As far as the guy that is covert, I think he would be happier if he faced his stutter for a longer period of time, until he gains comfort stuttering. He might have fluency being covert, but he’s in a trap of his own mind. I would choose fear and exposure over being covert any day. Even when people are covert they are dealing with the fear of being found out. And choosing to not say the words we want to say will never allow us to reach our full potential in life. It’s like when someone goes into a wheel chair and then their muscles begin to atrophy. It’s the same thing being covert. The more we don’t speak those feared words, the smaller inside we become. Until each feared word has become a bar, forming a prison cell around us. Tell me if you see it a different way. I’d be happy to hear that someone actually feels happy and content being covert, or is it just a tolerable experience? For me I feel excited when I use a word that usually makes me feel afraid. I think the reason the guy you talked to goes into “psychological combat” with his thoughts is that when he begins to stutter, his ego is is recognizing that he is about to do something courageous, so his ego pulls back on him and tries to send him a warning signal that he shouldn’t be doing what he’s doing. But it’s just a lie. He should carry on forward with his journey to desensitization. Though I totally understand that if someone hasn’t learned any speech technique, then being covert seems like the only option. And I was there once until I began learning the McGuire Program. I’m really passionate about reaching our full potential when it comes to speaking and believe being covert doesn’t allow that. I hope when you say that you accept defeat, this is something that makes you feel good and free, right? Thanks again for the reply. I’m curious to know what you think...Is being covert the best option for someone that stutters, or is it just a good enough option?
