It’s not a “learning disability”. That would suggest stuttering affects your learning ability, memory, or IQ, which we know it doesn’t. Stuttering is a physical disability caused by deficits in the timing cues (neurotransmitters) in the speech center of the brain. Hence it leads to impaired coordination of the vocal cords and other speech muscles, which leads to vocal blocks and repetitions (stuttering). Stuttering is definitely a disability, especially if it’s severe. I have an extremely severe stutter that’s present 100% of the time, which speech therapy has never helped with. I’m functionally mute and use pen & paper, text/IM messaging, and emails to communicate. I plan on using a text-to-speech device to allow me to “speak” in the future.
