I have to agree with you, I feel like I stutter more when I think about it than when I don't, and when I'm being rather fluent for a conversation then stutter, it's harder to avoid it happening again because then I'm thinking about it and embarrassed by it. Most of the time when I'm in a conversation, I give short answers or it's an unwanted conversation that I'm too focused on getting out of it than being covert so I don't stutter or don't realize that I do. Or I'm in a conversation with my boyfriend, and he's good at either finoshing my sentences or otherwise brushing it off so that I honestly either don't realize it or don't do it, so... I don't know if this is much help, but I'm eager to see others' replies.
