Need advice (26M) Hi there. Just found this sub and if this is the wrong place to post, please advise me. I live in Canada and have a mild speech impediment that pops up whenever I use vowels and especially with the letters V and W. For example, words like "vanilla" or "woman" if I say without thinking in a sentence, I will immediately stutter and stop and take multiple attempts to force it out or have to change my sentence and try again. Something that helps with this is saying the difficult word under my breath first right before using it loudly. There is another problem I have which is harder to explain. I have difficulty swallowing and taking full breaths. For swallowing, it feels like my throat is constricted and no matter how hard I swallow, it doesn't do anything and I will wake up at night and have to change my posture or drink water to get the feeling of swallowing properly before my body is satisfied and I can relax. The feeling of not being able to swallow is the worst because it throws me into a panic mode and several attempts of moving my head frantically until I'm finally able to swallow. The same thing goes for breathing. Every so often I will need to take a deep breath and no matter how much or how hard to try to breathe in, my lungs won't fill up fully and I need to immediately change my body position and try again and again until I get that feeling of my lungs being full and I can relax. This isn't so much of a constant thing but every few hours and sometimes I'll go days without an incident. This has been going on for as long as I can remember and maybe due to my speech impediment, it's really difficult to explain to a doctor how it feels. Sometimes it's not really a big deal and I can change my body position until I'm able to get that deep breath in or swallow when my throat just refuses to do so. Recently, the amount of times it's happening is increasing and I go into panic attacks when I can't swallow or take a deep breath. So now I'm seeking advice on two things: Firstly, with regards to the speech impediment, how do I go about fixing my speech because it's affecting my confidence and ability to speak publicly. I know about speech language pathologists but are there any cheaper alternatives? My insurance only covers two sessions but I know that I will need to put money down if I really want to fix the problem. Secondly, with regards to swallowing/breathing, whether or not this is something I need to get looked at and how to explain it to a medical professional.
