I’ve had the same contemplations (also an auditor in public accounting). I remember when I first came on as an intern I told my senior “I am enjoying my job but ideally I would end up working somewhere where I don’t have to speak to anyone”. Fast forward to now, my favorite part about this job is speaking with the client and (when we get approval) meeting them face to face and having discussions. As someone who’s stuttered their whole life and continues to mutter through Zoom meetings, it can be embarrassing (especially when you have important meetings like the one you’ve described). However, I think it is important to put yourself out there. We’ve all had those embarrassing moments, but I think those experiences only help us. I can confidently say this job has been more beneficial to me as a person who stutters, than any therapy I’ve had in the past. Personally, I don’t understand how people stay in public accounting for their whole career, but, if your goal is to get promoted to partner you should stick with it. You’ve made it this far.
