Similarly, I started stuttering at the age of 16 due to depression and stress. My mother is alcoholic and since I was little kid I was always stressed and worried if she'll drink today or not. Till the age of 16 I copied with it somehow, but things took bad turn when I changed school, which was not a pleasant change for me, because I lost my friends and I had to make new ones. But due to my mother's alcoholism which I mentioned before, I had very low self esteem, and felt lesser person to the other kids who had normal families. Gradually, in class I started to withdraw myself, tried to be invisible, and every time the teacher asked me to answer a question or read something, I panicked and struggled to even open my mouth. So, at that period I developed my stuttering despite the fact that before that I never had any problem with speaking. Change of school seemed to be the turning point for me. Now I'm 36 and the last few years I overcame my stuttering and very rearly I'll find difficulties with speaking. What I did was to go to a psychologist, I did therapy few months, we unraveled what was causing me the stuttering, and step by step I got my confidence back and stopped stuttering. So, stuttering in my case wes purely based on psychological issues.
