I was working front desk at a hotel. Guest had an issue with his room that smelled like paint. (Hotel was going through a renovation) I had to diffuse situation while my nerves were in high gear and stuttered my way confidently thru changing his room, adding points, and walking him to the new room to make sure it was suitable for him. Throughout the course of the conversation, the more I stuttered, the more I saw him lighten up. He continued to assure me that we’d done the best to help him in the situation and etc. I wish him a good night and head back to the front desk. Fast forward to 15 minutes later, I’m at the front desk filing paperwork and he comes up. I’m internally DREADING what this man has to say thinking that something else had gone wrong in the room (for those who’ve worked in hotels you know the deal). He cryptically asks “is it okay if I ask you something personal?” Now me being a 22 yr old female, I was shook because I really didn’t feel like being hit on or the usual flirty guest and receptionist banter that happens after 10pm. Nevertheless I indulged. He then asked me if I’ve stuttered my whole life, being that he stuttered his whole life and had seldom met a female with a stutter. I was floored. No one had ever so boldly addressed my stuttering to make open conversation about it. Long story short the conversation blossomed into how he “cured” his stuttering by reading this particular book everyday and going through life and public speaking as a lifelong stutterer within his company (he worked corporate for a car manufacturer). It was one of the most life changing conversations I had ever had thus far in my life. I even bought the book he recommended within half an hour of our conversation! (The book didn’t essentially “cure” my stuttering but it has helped me understand the fear that I directly link to my stutter and find ways to cope with it.) We still keep in touch via email every once in a while so it’s nice. Positive outcome indeed. Tl;dr: Met a guy while working in a hotel. Guy stuttered his whole life but recently “cured” himself thru coping techniques and reading a book. I bought the book. It helped me top. Also made a friend.
