>I’ll go out to practice my speech and end up stuttering and feel even worse In my experience, I also feel worse - when practicing, if: * I believe that stuttering is bad and to be avoided * I measure fluency This helps me to stop feeling worse. I stop measuring fluency (unhelpful strategy) and instead I measure helpful things. **Measuring the amount that**: * that we applied fluency laws i.e., reinforcing direct automatic natural speech * that we stopped measuring fluency * that we learned from mistakes i.e., trial and error and [inhibitory learning](https://iocdf.org/expert-opinions/the-inhibitory-learning-approach-to-exposure-and-response-prevention/) * that we stop linking speech errors to the stutter disorder/problem & that we stop believing that stuttering is bad and to be avoided * that we apply a condition to speak fluently in all situations * that we tried to unblock **less** * that we didn't give in to triggers like 'I can't breathe out during a block' and that we breathe out regardless * that we had intention and awareness of our speaking & that we distract ourselves **less** from this * that we didn't try to convince our instinct * that we associated reasons with 'justifying to stop breathing out' **less**
