I’m not sure what country you’re in, but in most countries, these are regulated enables, and would require a prescription. Stuttering is caused by a multitude of factors, including an imbalance of dopamine in the brain where speech takes place. Most of the medication that would affect dopamine are also commonly used for depression and anxiety so the most knowledgeable doctor would actually be a psychiatrist. That’s the doctor that actually helped me find the right medication for me and I just explained to them. I wasn’t there for the usual purpose, but to explore medication that would help my stutter. If you want help explaining to a doctor what your goals are it might be helpful to reach out to Dr. Gerald Maguire of UC Riverside. He’s a psychiatrist and stutter himself who actually uses Saphris personally and does a lot of stuttering research. I’m not sure if he still does but at one point he and his team worked on educating individuals doctors about the pharmacology surrounding stuttering.
