Ugh… I feel your pain on the drive thru. I used to have such anxiety about ordering. I’d ask my sister to order for me, leaning over from the passenger side. I’ve learned to be ok with writing my order on a piece of scrap paper and just pulling past the speaker to the first window. I write, “ I have a stutter, speaking is hard for me” and then my order. Everyone has been super nice about it. I don’t always do it, but it makes me less anxious when I do use the speaker, knowing I have another option. Side note: it’s helped me to remember that a lot of people don’t know anyone with a stutter, so they just don’t know what’s going on when I stutter. If they laugh, it’s usually because they’re trying to make me feel more comfortable—it’s what fluent people do for each other. Some people are just rude though. TL;DR: 1. writing your order down and not talking is totally ok. 2. Some people are assholes.
