You can want more than one thing from life, and what you want is likely to change as you grow. Accomodating for your disability as a variable in that regard is a mature way to manage expectations. Just like we shouldn’t be defined solely by our handicaps we also shouldn’t be defined solely on our professional successes. I see so many people here vocally endorse uncritically reaching for the stars and making romantic leaps of faith career wise, not recognizing the survivorship biases and extenuating privileges in their own journeys. Meanwhile, even a lot of people without disabilities are, through no fault of their own, utterly stalling in their careers. Shit is hard for all of us and no amount of positive thinking will make up for the realities of the job market. Pretending you have a lot of choice in the matter is simply opening up for another vector of failure you can blame yourself for. We need to recognize our weaknesses in finding employment as well as we need to recognize and reject the notion that the worth of an individual only can be measured through their career.
