That’s a loaded question haha. The answer to that is unfortunately not satisfying. It depends on the person and mostly time.So what’s worked for me won’t necessarily work for you but here’s a couple things that helped me. 1. The first 20 or so minutes of Mark Manson’s The Art of Not Giving a Fuck. The audiobook randomly popped up on my Youtube recommended and quite literally changed my life. 2. Find other things to care about. If you want to stop caring so much about your stutter, find things you care about more. This is where the time part comes in. Knowing what you hold truly important and your personal values takes time. It can also change. But always trying to mirror your thoughts, words, actions to what you find meaningful helps. (And trust me, your stutter ain’t important, not in the big life scheme of things) 3. Put yourself in situations that make you uncomfortable in terms of your stutter. Not terrifying to the point of anxiety attack, but uncomfortable. You never know what you can do until you try. Sometimes it’ll be rough but you build resilience to what others think. I did customer service retail for 8 years and by the end of it, talking to strangers was nothing even when they gave me odd looks and comments if I stuttered. 4. Stop asking yourself “why did this happen to me of all people?” This is a deep, dark never-ending hole of misery. Nobody knows why but everyone has their extra battle that they have to face that’s unique to them. Disability, addiction, chronic sickness, etc. What is it trying to teach you? 5. I recently graduated with my Masters and my professor (in attempts to be kind) said she couldn’t wait until I get out in my profession and “conquer the field and stop stuttering”. You can imagine I recoiled as if she slapped me. In her eyes, I could only be successful if I stopped stuttering. However, in my eyes, I am successful because I can accomplish whatever I want in spite of my stutter. Her comment really made me see how much I’ve grown, and you gotta learn to appreciate the challenges as they come. Progress won’t be linear, there are good and bad days. Then one day you'll stop and realize how far you've come. Sorry for the essay haha, hope you found something that resonated with you. No worries if not, we all have our own path to build. And that’s the hardest thing about life really, is you gotta find your journey to what you want by yourself mostly.
