Stuttering my whole life Hello everyone! Recently discovered this was a sub, so figured I’d vent a little and see if anyone has any advice. So, I’m enlisted in the military and have a very particular job which involves me having to teach people from all ages/ranks. Normally, when I speak, I speak very very fast (I’m from a very particular east coast state, you know the one.) i also tend to mentally read everything super fast, I don’t know if that’s related In any way. I understand the standard “tricks” that all of us know like slowing down, breathing, positive mental attitude, and all that Jazz, and although it improves my teaching some, when I stutter, I noticeably stutter. It’s almost like my brain freezes, and everything is stuck, almost like a final showdown between me and that stutter, and the stutter always wins. Now let me clarify, I’m very very lucky to have the type of speech impediment that I have. I went from a kid who could barely talk in elementary/middle school, to now having conversations with people and they are completely unaware that I have it. What most people don’t know, though, is that I mastered the wrong kinds of techniques. If I know I’m about to stutter, I can almost instantly change the word I was going to say for a different word; (i.e about to stutter on shelf, but quickly switched it for cabinet, it also involves a lot of swearing.) but I’ve grown tired of this. I want to try to fully master my speech and not let it bring me down anymore, both mentally and physically. If anyone has any advice or anything please, feel free to drop a line. Thank you all for the continuous support you each other.
