Medication for stuttering does not have the same effect on everyone and results may drastically vary. Combined with possible side effects, we don’t want to give false hope that there is a cure or magic bullet. We are not medical doctors or psychiatrists. We are therapists. I am not going to recommend to my clients’ parents they medicate their child when I can teach evidence and research based strategies to manage stuttering for life. Adult clients can do their research and talk to their doctor about stuttering meds. As a therapist I will always recommend therapy. The “teach a man to fish” analogy comes to mind.
