I’m a fully recovered, 100% fluent former stutterer who only recovered at age 70! I still talk to myself though I am fully engaged with others. I think you’re right about stutterers talking to themselves. Maybe it’s just an artifact of my personality. I even still rehearse what I’ve already said like I did when I stuttered.
