Sorry in advance for the long comment. Summary will be below. I have worked at a fast food place for the past 8 mos. and have been bounced around a bit and am now at a third location that I have been at for 5 mos. I have told every GM and people that I have grown to know I can trust, about my stutter. At this current location I have only told 3 people about it and ofc with it being a fast food type place I have to take a lot of orders over a headset. I absolutely hate that thing. Over time certain phrases have come up that are typically impossible for me to say like, "will you please pull up to the window," or even "I'm sorry about that, is there anything I can do to fix that for you," it is beyond frustrating when I hear that beeping noise and have to take an order. I work at a drive in so there are times I will literally just go outside to take someone's order. Sometimes that is the only time I can take someone's order without them thinking I can't hear them. I will tell customers I have a stutter if they ask if I am ok or if a kid asks me why I 'sound funny' but usually I avoid it because just saying the word stutter is a nightmare and a half. Most of my customers are super nice when they hear me on speaker or see me coming out with their order but sometimes not so much. If people don't want to talk a little bit with me that's fine, idc if they just want to give me the money they owe and take the food and close the window I don't mind much, though a tip is always welcome. It's those customers that tell me that I shouldn't be working there with my stutter that make me want to yell back some remark. Despite it all something happened to me just last week that made me feel so much better when stuttering on that speaker. A man with his young preteen son who had a stutter. The man told me how much it meant to him and his son to see me working there even with my stutter and he even left me a very generous tip. It made my night and I have not let myself feel sorry about having a stutter since. It's amazing how many incredible people you meet when working at a fast food place. Tldr: I hate taking speaker with my stutter but one night I learned I was one kid's hero, making it all worth it.
