I always try to remember that a lot of speech fluent people don't come into contact with stutterers much, so they're unsure how to act and don't want to be rude. If I'm stuttering, I pause to quickly explain I have a stutter (for some reason I can always do that without stuttering) and then you've acknowledged the elephant in the room and it puts everyone at ease
