Help writing stutters Hi, I just discovered this subreddit and I don't stutter, so I thought I'd find information from those who do. I want to write characters that realistically stutter in a way that's not just played for comedic relief or whatever. So I guess my main questions are: What are some of the most common letters/sounds you stutter on? Do you have any tricks to avoid certain words that trigger your stutter? How would you react if someone tried to finish the words for you, like cutting you off as you're getting through the word? And if you have any more advice portraying stutters realistically when writing, please include it! Edit: oh wow you guys have absolutely amazing advice, thank you so much! I was expecting maybe one, two people responding, not this many with some great tips! I'm not making the stutter a singular personality trait, don't worry. I personally hate it when people write characters with personalities like "is a woman" or "is autistic" or "is gay" because let's be real, that's lazy, boring, and like mildly offensive. I don't have the energy to respond to all of you individually, but just know: thank you!! This is super helpful and also helped me like, realize when I've been rude to classmates who stuttered so now I can fix my behavior. Drink some water, have a nice day, thanks for the help and feel free to add more or chime in if you want. Y'all are great!
